Inspiration for Beautiful, Livable Landscapes

Garden Ideas

A collection of garden ideas, plant combinations and seasonal inspiration drawn from my work as a landscape designer and lifelong love of plants.

From container combinations and planting ideas to simple ways of bringing more beauty, texture and year-round interest into the landscape.

Combinations for bringing color, texture and movement to the fall garden

Nothing Says Fall Like a Mum...  This Red (Burgundy) Chrysanthemum in an Old Ice Cream Maker 'Bucket' is both an Ode to the past while the wood slats and rusty binders give the planter a fresh rustic and natural feel. You can add any other whispy, trailing plants like the Angel Vine or what I've done here is add the tops of Autumn Joy Sedum, which not only look gorgeous but they also form new plants!

Mums come in so many wonderful colors. Never throw them away after the season, plant them in your garden as a perennial!

    Perennials & Pumpkins

This has become a fall go to for me, because I love the multi-use of Perennials! The Autumn fern, nearly Evergreen in the South, looks good with EVERYTHING! Just like in a floral arrangement, it just adds a texture like no other. The Purple love grass in the bottom left, if a new Alabama Native favourite grown by Barton's Nursery. It just keeps getting prettier the deeper into the season and the hotter it gets leaving its full bloom or flume to texture fall. The orange purslane is the only annual here boasting its true orange perfection! Just a lovely combination.

      Kales, Kales, Kales...

Ornamental Kale and Cabbages are absolutely a must have for anyone that gardens, wants to garden, or even pretends to garden. They are absolutely amazing plants. This in a young Pink Flowering Songbird Variety Kale that is flanked with Nandina Berries (as they begin to come into their winter red, they start out with a fresh lime green), Thyme herb after a first frost will give a nice autumn pink and green. This also has my very favourite plant, Asiatic Jasmine Snow-n-summer boasting its multi-colour leaves with soft cream pinks and whites. This is a ground cover I often use to fill and spill in container gardens.
