Water 'How-To' Houseplants

How to Water when Pots Do Not Have Drainage Holes

This is Just a quick clip of watering a pot without drainage holes. The weather has been cold so the heat has been on, a lot, which tends to dry indoor plants out pretty quickly. I monitor indoor plants daily when the bright sun is pouring in and the dry heat from the heaters are on.  You will water more frequently, while making sure that you are not watering too much.

Easy Care Tips:

Sunlight

Bright to Modest Indirect Light Indoors. Supplemental Light can be added if you need more light in a dark area such as a table lamp with LED bulbs, a fluorescent light is great if possible. You can also purchase both grow lights and bulbs from any big box or online retailer.

Water

Set a watering schedule based upon the plant's needs. Regardless of the species, plan on watering indoor pants at least every 10 days. This will vary in different environmental conditions like if the heater is on, if it is in a bright sunny window - most definitely water more often. The most important factor is to not let the pot build up with water. Very few plants like their roots to be submersed in water and they will perish quickly with root rot. You can prevent this by using draining pots or by watering more frequently with smaller portions each time. The finger test in the soil is pretty tried and true to detect moisture. If it is somewhat moist, leave it be.

Elements

The plants used in my works are typically low to moderate light choices which make for good indoor plants. They tend to be frost and freeze sensitive, so keep protected from harsh sun, wind and freezing temps.

Care Tips for Living Artworks by Plant Variety

TIPS FOR PLANT CARE

Angel Vine, Wire Vine (Muhlenbeckia) Treat as a house plant in the winter months to protect from freezing. Super fun and versatile little tiny leafed trailing and vining plant is super versatile and can handle full sun all the way to full shade, making it a great indoor house plant. More sun, more water just make sure the water is draining from the container.

Alocasia (Kris Plant): Although this is a stunning house plant and adds contrast, texture and form, it is a little tricky in an non-draining container.  It needs to stay somewhat moist but without holding water (well drained). This can be achieved by watering less but more frequently. They prefer bright indirect light and don't mind regular misting of the leaves. Give it a try. They are worth it!

Dorotheanthus: Common name Livingstone Daisy is just a dandy all-season plant. So surprisingly Christmasy for its juicy succulent like texture and growth habit. Use in a bright light indoors and outside during the warmer months. Great container plant in conjunction with other light and water needs or as a single specimen. Has a gorgeous red flower with green and white variegated plump leaves/foliage. Prefers dry soil.

Hoya Plant/Wax Plant: Hoya plants thrive on BRIGHT indirect light and will bloom if sufficient. Do not over water, if anything, less is more with these wax leaved trailing plants. Protect from freezing temps.

Orchids (Phalaenopsis) and Anthurium: Place orchids and/or Anthurium  in bright indirect light. Water 1x week (aprox.) They do NOT need the direct sun nor any build up of water. Humidity and good airflow, along with regular fertilizing will enable the orchid to re-bloom. Do some further research on how to cut back the stem on Phalaenopsis Orchids for reblooming.

Succulents - Sedums - Cacti - Christmas Cactus - Agave/Mangave - Pilea :  These plants store water so do not overwater or allow any water to build up in pots. Watering from the side of each plant is optimal. They grow best in bright light, a warm sunny window would be perfect. Although a lot of the varieties act as perennials outside, do not leave outside during our winter months.

Peacock Moss (Selaginella Uncinata) and Rabbit's Foot Fern: Place in a shady area, porch or indoors. They like rich damp soil, but do this by watering more frequently rather than over-watering the container. None of these container gardens should build up water. You can mist the unique leaves, runners and 'feet' as well.

Ponytail Palm (Beaucarnea): The ponytail palm (Beaucarnea) is not a palm tree at all. Instead, it’s a succulent, a part of the agave family. This makes them great house plants that can spend a majority of time outdoors in our area. Indoors, place in bright indirect light and prepare to love this easy to grow structural plant. Do not over-water, maybe once a week or once every two weeks (if the plant is situated in less heat and light). Don't worry about misting either, because like agave, they love dry air!

Rotate pots around to keep a nice balanced look.
